If you walk into a real-world casino in the US, you can be reasonably sure the games are fair. Each state runs oversight of the casinos’ operations and, so far as it can, ensures we all have a reasonable chance of winning. Put another way, real-world casinos have a claim to be transparent. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the online gambling world. Most of the virtual casinos are based in countries interested only in taking the licence fees. This produces a real lack of transparency so that, even when there are legitimate complaints made and the regulators “investigate”, there’s little to explain what the investigators actually do and how aggressively they enforce control over the casinos in their countries. It’s all about killing the goose laying the golden jackpots. If the regulators are an effective police force, the casinos will move their virtual operations elsewhere and the state treasury loses out.

Which brings us to the certificates issued by Technical Systems Testing (TST). This is an organization making its living by compliance testing games and it works closely with the regulators in Canada, the UK, Australia and other countries with developed gambling industries. Most recently, it has been certifying the random number generators used online. All the fair and honest sites based in highly regulated countries like the UK carry certificates such as those issued by TST. So how reliable are the TST certificates?

As TST honestly states on its own site, it’s not a policing body. It works in the same way as the auditing profession. It looks at what it is given and gives its opinion. Because of the nondisclosure agreements it signs, it can never discuss how or why some certificates are (or are not) issued. You have to take on trust the assertion that TST is an independent body and gives an unbiased opinion. This is rather like the defense raised by the rating agencies in the financial meltdown. They certified the investments issued by the banks as AAA only to see them worth nothing a few months later. When an organization depends on the fee income from a single source, there’s an inevitable conflict of interest. If you do not certify, you get no fee income.

But, the real question comes about what happens to the software TST tests and certifies fair. As it rightly says, it’s not a policing body and it’s not a regulator. It has no power to check whether the software it verified is the software in play a few weeks later. For any certificate to be worth the pixels used to display it on a screen, there should be monthly testing on site. With Bodog and other casino games operators using TST certificates in their press releases, the burden of proof is now on TST to prove its certificates have real value. As it stands, there would seem to be every chance that TST could end up in the same unhappy position as the auditors who declared Enron accounts a fair representation of its trading position. Without regular, routine and random testing on site, there would seem no guarantee the certificates show fair and honest casino games in play.

In San Francisco, Apple s chief executive officer Steve Jobs took the wraps off the new edition of the iPhone on Monday, June 9, 2008. Aesthetically, the difference between the two generations is barely perceptible. The news makers, however, were the new additions to the much-anticipated gadget. The new iPhone sports a 3rd-generation (3G) wireless support, affording faster Internet connections than the previous, slower, EDGE support.

Another is the addition of business-friendly capabilities, such as synchronized e-mail and calendar through Microsoft s Mail Exchange, and access to corporate data. And of course, full support to third-party applications was touted and some were showcased. In addition, the new iPhone also supports global positioning system (GPS), which is good for locating colleagues with supported devices and for navigation.

And probably the biggest news was the price: USD199 for the 8-gigabyte model and USD299 for the one with 16 gigabytes. And the device will be simultaneously available in 21 countries on July 11, 2008, to be expanded to later in the year to 70 countries including Cameroon, Egypt, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Jordan, Mali, Niger, Qatar, Senegal, and Turkey. The new price is a big departure from the USD599 price tag of the first iPhones rolled out on June 29, 2007.

Except for the announcement on broadening the iPhone map into several dozen new countries, every piece of information in Steve Jobs  keynote was widely rumored ahead of the event, though not confirmed. Exciting as Apple has made these feature to look, however, many users may not notice them. After all, Wi-Fi, which the iPhone has supported from the start, remains the faster, and most of the time cheaper, alternative to carrier-offered 3G. And what is the percentage of new young users who cannot live without Microsoft Exchange support?

What Is New in a New iPhone?

Still, the new iPhone is new in a curious way. It is the fullest realization of the bundling phase that mobile phones have been undergoing for the past eight years. Ever since Sharp, the Japanese manufacturer, offered a camera-mounted mobile phone in 2000, a near-consensus emerged among commentators (and it turned out, manufacturers) that bundling more services and features was the trend of the future for mobile phones.

And an arms race of sorts followed among manufacturers to add the most useful and intuitive (and not-so-useful-or-intuitive) features: a video-capture capability; a full QWERTY keypad; a gaming capability; MP3 player; support for business applications like corporate e-mail, Wi-Fi, WiMax, expandable memory, capable Web browser, Bluetooth (wireless short-range technology), infra-red, TV streaming, and bar-code reading; there were even experiments on adding landmine-detection capabilities to certain models of mobile phones. A 2005 New Scientist article rightly described the mobile phone as the new Swiss Army Knife.

But as is always the case with information technologies, the how much is too much question gradually arose. And it was not probably feasible to pack all the features in a single reasonably priced gadget. With a fierce competition and little time to ponder this long-standing question, most manufacturers seem to have opted for an easier solution: to segment the market. The ultimate exemplary of this thinking is Nokia, so far the world s largest mobile phone manufacturer, with its tens of models geared toward different audiences. For instance, there is the business line, which is heavier on business applications, and the media line, with better support for music and video.

With a few exceptions (such as the unexpected success of Motorola s extra-slim Razr, whose external design was its biggest selling feature), the segmentation paradigm seemed to hold. And other smart phones manufacturers, like Palm and BlackBerry, in fact toed the line, offering different models aimed explicitly at different purposes.

Interface Supremacy :

Until the iPhone emerged. That was in December 2006, when Steve Jobs gave the first glimpses of the new keypad-less, multi-touch gadget, with a user interface carrying visual resemblances to the Mac operating system, which runs Apple s computers. On the new gadget, icons glowed, menus flowed, and the wide (3.5 inch) display seemed the first realistic option to browse the Internet and actually read stuff online.

If the ensuing media fixation on the iPhone, particularly after it was released about seven months later, was any indicator, that was Apple s finest hour. A Harvard business professor estimated that the free media publicity Apple received in coverage for the iPhone was in the vicinity of USD400 millions, Wired magazine reported last March.

As far as features were concerned, the iPhone appears to have struck a successful formula for the how much is good enough question. Most importantly, the sophisticated features were hidden under the hood of a breakthrough user interface. Internal complexity was cloaked in outer simplicity, similar to the Google homepage. Indeed Apple, which offered the first graphical user interface in 1983 in its Apple Lisa systems, made a point in its iPhone: Features were important (the Wi-Fi, the camera, media player, etc.), but the user interface was even more so. The interface was the fabric that held these features together and determined how they were, or were not, going to be used.

In its iPhone second act, Apple is focusing on making the best of its advanced interface. Thanks to a powerful processor, the new games, map applications, GPS, media player, all look exactly at home on the iPhone. Most of what the iPhone offers, strictly speaking, has been offered by others for years. But Apple s focus on striking the right bundle (instead of multiple lines and consumer segments) and superior user interface puts its iPhone far ahead of the competition. At least for now.

The game is one of the simplest ever invented. The rules are few and there’s no physical effort involved in playing it. You just sit, look at a few cards and make your bets. That’s probably why it’s become one of the most popular casino games of all time. Of course everyone knows the House has an edge. That’s how it pays all the expenses for running the casino. Remember it makes no difference whether this is a casino in the real world or online. You still need people and a base. So common sense tells you that no-one beats the House unless they invest some effort. Put another way: if everyone could beat the House without breaking sweat, the casino would go out of business in a day. This produces the headline: no pain, no gain. You have to put in some study time to master the basic strategy.

So what is this strategy? Over the years, some serious math types did all the work for you. They calculated the best way to play all the card combinations and wrote them down in simple charts. If you were going to play in a real casino, you would have to learn all these rules. That saves you having to pause before every decision to check the charts. Not only would the other players around the table be less than impressed, the casino would probably suggest you leave. But playing online changes all that. You can consult the charts as often as you like before deciding which card to play. It may be slow but, if you get the strategy right for every hand, you just shifted the odds in your favor.

So what are these charts? The first gives you the rules on when to split a pair. The strategy changes depending on the value of the cards dealt to you and the value of the card you can see the Dealer holding. So it starts with the rule that you split a pair of aces no matter what the Dealer holds, and goes down to the choices when you hold a pair of 2s. The other two charts deal with hard hands and soft hands. A hard hand is when neither card is an ace and the strategy changes significantly depending on the card held by the Dealer and the table rules on when the Dealer must stand or draw. A soft hand contains an ace and is easier to play because you can always draw one more card without busting – this takes some of the pressure off the play. I started off by saying blackjack is an easy game but, like all games, you can play for fun or you can take it seriously and play to win. In this case, you are more likely to win if you learn the charts and can play the strategy without thinking. To really take on the House edge, you also have to become a card counter but that’s a whole new story because it does not work in a virtual casino. For now, focus on the basic strategy and start your winning blackjack career.

There’s a sad fact about playing in a casino, whether real or virtual. The operators have worked out how to play the games on offer and set the odds to favor themselves. After all, if the majority did not lose, there would be no money to pay out all the money you win. Needless to say, the casinos have invested time and money into working out every possible variation on the rules and the ways to play under them. So, if you are going to take on the House edge, you have to become as big an expert on the rules as the operators. So let’s start with one of the more interesting rules which decides when you are allowed to double down. This applies when you have received your two cards. If you decide you are going to draw only one more card, the casino rules can allow you to double your initial bet. The different possibilities are to double:

  • on any card combination;
  • only when the two cards total 9, 10 or 11; or
  • after splitting.

Why should you double your bet? The answer is deceptively simple. You double the bet when you think you are going to beat the Dealer. That really does make sense. But because you are suddenly investing more money in playing the game and have more to lose, you need to get on board with the math. You need to know the frequency with which the Dealer is likely to go bust based on the card you can see. If the Dealer’s card suggests a bust is probable, i.e. the Dealer’s hand is weak, you double the bet when you have a strong hand. You are maximizing the chance of making a good profit on the hand. If you build the doubling rule into your basic strategy, you reduce the House edge. If you refuse to play the doubling rule, the House edge actually increases. This is not to claim you will win every hand when you double down. If you are on a losing streak, you could lose every doubled bet for the session. But, in the long term, you will win more than you lose if you double. If you hesitate to double the bet, it suggests you are outside your comfort zone and already playing for higher stakes than you can afford.

At the blackjack table, the Dealer is weakest when showing a card in the range 2 through 6. With a 2, the bust percentage is 35%. It rises to a 42% chance of busting with a 5 or 6. Your hand is strongest if the two card total is less than 11. Do not be thrown off the basic strategy by the casinos that allow you to add less than the original bet. Blackjack is a game for winners. Never give up the chance to double and take the maximum win against the Dealer. Adding a few dollars to the original bet but not doubling is half-hearted and cowardly.

No game guarantees you the first place. No online game will guarantee you the winner title. Even if you spend years practicing have a chance to lose. If we talk about online blackjack – well, probably it is the best combination of skill and luck. But you should not think that there is nothing you can do to give yourself a possibility to win if you don’t consider yourself too lucky. Here we will share our visitors’ top 5 advices with you. Those five will help you gain more money playing blackjack.

1: One of the most important aspects is the game choice. Don’t get into wrong notion that blackjack is a standard game. There are lots of variations of it. Players usually stick to their favorite game, the one that brings them more money. However we don’t recommend you to play one and same game all the time. Sometimes it makes perfect sense to try your luck with another type.

2: If you are the type of player that needs a real casino instead an online one – you better secure yourself with a club card. Player’s club cards give you lots of privilege. These privileges could decrease your expenses in the casino, which is always favorable. What will a player’s club card do for you? It will grant you free meals and maybe a free room on some occasions.

3: If the game doesn’t look too bright or if the game requires you to come back another time – you should really stop at 17. But you should remember that this will only work in the case of no low cards appearing on the table yet. Which also means the next low card could be yours which you do not want. You should try various combinations where you can re-split or double down your cards.

4: Always stay in your mind with bets. I know sometimes it seems like the one that bets more wins more but this theory could be false. People make big bets in order to impress others around; they want to make others bet much as well. If you plan to use some kind of Blackjack system, don’t make it your Bible. There is no one irresistible method for winning in Blackjack. If such method excisted, then the person that created it would definitely not be selling it to you for a few dollars. Why would they do it? Sounds a good question.

5: The fifth advice would be not to believe those silly stories about counting cards in blackjack as it is never the case. If you are some kind of a math genius, you may try that one for a change but trust me; most of us won’t be able to count it up.

Another important note to remember would be not let anybody rush you or tell you how to play. As long as you know exactly what you are doing – you are safe. If you don’t trust yourself with cards and you know you can put too much at steak – don’t enter the casino.

Know your budget when you play. Don’t ever let the casino control your life, you should control it. We wish you good luck with it and hope our advices helped you to know more about the blackjack game.

When playing games that have to do with luck or chance (like poker or blackjack) there is a certain set of rules that will make your playing experience a lot more effective and exciting. These rules are not something to follow strictly, however you will see that they really help if taken into account and will save you a lot of time and stress if applied during your gaming process. The games you play, your experience or bankroll do not affect the way you should interpret these tips as they are of universal effectiveness and can be applied in most gaming situations. So here we go:

  • Learn the rules before actually playing a game. That is a must when thinking of playing just any game at the casino. First, you have to clearly understand the rules behind the game and make sure you understand all the terminology. You can’t play blackjack if you can’t count to 21. Just imagine going to a business meeting where everyone’s speaking Japanese (and you don’t understand any single word out of it). The same thing hare. And there’s really no excuse in not knowing the rules with some many free online casinos out there today, where you can practice as much as you want.
  • Keep a slow pace of your gaming process. Don’t net everything you have in the first 15 minutes, because gambling is about the fun of playing, not spending all you got as fast as you can. Make sure you follow your own rhythm and have something to gamble with after and hour or two into the game.
  • Define your playing budget. You will have to set the maximum amount of money you can afford losing during the nigh. And don’t spend even a penny over this amount. Forget about your credit card and leave it at home, because the temptation of withdrawing more money will be very strong, and if you will actually do it you will have to deal with even a larger sum of money lost and all the hassle behind it.
  • Don’t try to outplay your losses. Of course the temptation of winning over your losses with larger bets will be high, but it’s definitely not the smartest thing to do. In fact, it will make the things even worse. In this case it is better to switch the table or the game altogether and start all over if you are still within your budget.
  • Avoid distractions. It is important to keep the focus on your gaming process. Because a simple and stupid mistake can result in a big loss. And that’s really disappointing.
  • Don’t push yourself too hard. Taking breaks is very important because it helps you stay in focus. Try refreshing yourself during the breaks and stay alert on what’s happening at the table when getting back.
  • Keep track of your emotions. Gambling is not the best thing to do when you’re angry, furious or depressed. Keep in mind that focus is the key to winning at any casino games and any emotions that will interfere with your alertness are a one way ticket to losing.
  • Try to have as much fun as possible. This is what gambling is all about. As long as you’re having fun when playing you’ll be less prone to losing money. Try to remember this and be positive about anything that happens at the table.

While gambling in the end it all comes to one simple notion: either you win or you lose, which is true with almost all the vast selection of casino games. And there is no way you can go around it with any given strategy. Still, there is one casino game where this rule can be avoided and there are real working ways if you have the right strategy for the game.

Though in natural blackjack there’s no way you can predict the outcome during the game, before you actually go to a playing table you can check out the numerous charts to see if your chosen strategy gives you any advantage during the game and what are the odds of winning.

Blackjack’s main goal is to have a card count that is as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. Besides, you should beat the dealer’s count in order to actually win. The are different numbers of cards used in each and every casino, so you should make sure you know whether it’s a single deck or 4 decks before going to the table and placing your bet.

A common method here is the so-called Basic strategy, it uses these variables to mathematically evaluate your chances of hitting the winning combination and there are numerous charts which take regard of the deck number at the table.

It is very easy to work with such charts . You have your totals outlined to the right, and the dealer’s totals sitting on top. All you have to do is match the raw and column of your and the house totals and see whether you have to hit, stand split or double on the next turn. There are numerous variations with online blackjack tables, taking in account whether you have soft, hard totals or pair splitting.

When playing this game online using such charts is very easy and helpful. No one restricts or limits you in using any additional information while playing blackjack online because it’s simply impossible to control such things at an online casino.

As a matter of fact Basic strategy is not about winning every time you sit at the table. There will be wins, and there will be losses, but over the long-term use of this method you will clearly see that it raises your advantages and lets you win more.

A substitute to the Basic strategy is the card counting system. If simply put, this method counts every card in the game to foresee what possible combinations are left within this particular game and give a player an advantage in knowing what to expect. Like with numerous variations of the Basic strategy, there are many different types of card counting systems that all relate to different circumstances and playing variables. The key to success here is to know which one works best for you by trying them all in different situations and seeing which is the most comfortable and effective to use. Playing online blackjack gives a very important advantage here – you won’t have to perfect your skills in front of real impatient player, having only to deal with virtual representations. Much less stress and much more learning opportunities!

Little by little you will get confident enough in your skills and new-found methods to join numerous online blackjack playing tables and see what advantages these blackjack strategies really offer.
